  3. SUMMONING THE COMMONS
  4. At the State Opening, Black Rod summons the Commons 
  5. by crossing the Central Lobby and passing through the 
  6. Members' Lobby towards the door of the Commons 
  7. chamber. As he approaches, the door is slammed shut in 
  8. his face by the Sergeant at Arms. The custom dates from 
  9. the 17th century, and demonstrates the Commons' right 
  10. to deliberate independently from the Crown
  11.  
  12. Black Rod then raps three times on the door of the Commons
  13. (the marks left by his ebony rod over the years have damaged
  14. one of the panels in the door). The door is then opened, he delivers the royal message - 'The Queen commands this honourable House to attend her Majesty immediately in the House of Peers' - and escorts the Speaker, followed by the members, back to the Lords.
